Interlude: Roman Centurion

You need to totally change subjects from time to time. Leaving your comfort area is healthy and good in every aspect. That's what I've done this time.
I've been wanting to paint some Roman stuff for ages. I have some 28mm Legionnaires lost in some drawer (in heavy need of love from my part, sigh), but I was looking for something different, kind of a bigger mini for the shelf. Then I found a real beauty from Nocturna Models.

When assembled he will look better

72mm scale, resin. Incredible sculpt, amazing casting. It was exactly what I was looking for. Some days later I came to this:

There were some steps before, forgot to take pics
When in Rome... you know

I'm happy with the results, but extremely unsatisfied with the pics. I tried different techniques for the several textures, and I enjoyed it all pretty much.

It all looks too flat in the pics! :(
The shield took more work than expected
'Romanes eunt domus'?? How dare you!!
That Superman guy asked for my cloak. Ha, he can hold his breath
What do you mean 'Mordor'? All roads lead to Rome!

As said before, the sculpt is simply amazing. The tiny details, the way they all complement each other... It's absolutely gorgeous. I'm no expert at all, but having been through a few books and references for research, I also happen to find the mini quite historically accurate, which is also certainly something. So esentially 12/10 for Nocturna Models, I have enjoyed enormously going through this mini. A more skilled painter would make wonders out of this one, but for me this is more than enough.

Well, after this unexpected break, I'll be coming back to my regular stuff. Or irregular stuff, I know the difference no more :D

  3. Fabulous job dude. Never tried anything this large yet. Though I do have a couple of largish 28s to do.

  4. That is fabulous, Suber. I am truly impressed that you were able to adapt your painting skills to such a different scale, since it really is apples-and-oranges with 28mm. Bravo!

    1. Haha, thank you! Well, of course I still have to learn a lot. The way you approach a mini this size is totally different, right. How the light & shade behave, how to paint a face... I still think too much 'in 28 mm' if you know what I mean, but it's been an enormous bit of fun!

  5. 72mm?? Fragging spectacular result!! Photos are always bad when I take them so I always add an extra 10% quality to any I see :P Well done, Suber.

  6. A very characterful model.
While his skin looks a bit weird, the clothing and armour are extremely well done.

    1. Thanks! Well, you know, that garum sauce from early this morning made him feel a little bit sick... :P
But apart from that he's quite ready for duty!

  8. Tremendous work! particularly like the cloak.

I have an absolute pile of INQ54 stuff I should get around to sometime, for the same reason, to stretch my painting skills to the limit.

    1. Thank you! Well, you really should get to work then! There were some cool minis in those ranges, I'd love to see what you do with them!

    2. Ha, yes me too... unfortunately I seem to have half converted everyone, which means it will take more than just reaching into the box to find a suitable subject for a test paint job.

    1. Thanks! Well, it's no secret, your work on other Nocturna Models minis is what made my mind up to choose this one. I'm of course quite far from your standards, but anyway I enjoyed painting it!!
