Until the last corner

It's been some time since I last brought you something about the sci-fi mining town. I finished the front part and I had the far side of the board pending:

Previously, in Old School Workshop...
I thought it would be better to finish it before moving to the central section of the board. So first thing was taking care of texture and weathering.

Carefully careless
These are the pieces that will fill that awful empty space:

Seriously, I need to have a word with those maintenance guys
 So, when in place...

This is the general idea of this side
The big stuff is done. From now on it was just a matter of adding details.

Posters and stuff of the like
I think this is the most complex piece of this stage. It's a perfume sample and cardboard
And wire all the thing up, of course
This side of the board is kind of unattractive. I mean, it's just a high, plain wall on a rocky corner. Gaming wise you have only a couple of doors to the interior and there is little space for anything. However, I felt I still had to make this part look somehow nice, or at least as part of the board. There was little else to add on the wall, but I still could do something at ground level. In order to do that I had to take a dreadful step... to add some sand right there!
Given the size of this thing it was a logistic issue, but I managed better than anticipated. I put the board on the window to let it dry quicker.

Fortunately no neighbours witnessed me. I scheduled it properly
This is what I got:

The sand looked too dark, I tried to solve it
Unfortunately I can't take decent pics even with sunlight
But this is the final aspect of the corner at the end of the board
Not much else to say, this side had to keep more or less simple. Here you can see the whole thing done:

Eh? What's that? That thing up there?
Oh, you got me. Time to reveal my cards. Up on the upper corner you can see I added some foamboard as it was part of... a ceiling? But isn't that piece just the highest part of the board?

Hmmm. Suspicious
I'm afraid not! In fact you might have noticed that the board so far leaves a part at the rear which is not used. Just the depth of that extension...
That's because you are just merely seeing the first module of my board. This will be the bottom part. But whenever I finish it another module will be built to be placed over this one.

I hope this pic is more revealing
It will be narrow indeed, but will add height to the town. Now you know why I have sometimes referred to this as a vertical board. I confess I don't have a real plan, as it will all depend on my storage capacity (which is currently seriously compromised). But all will come in due time, I still have plenty of work ahead just on this module. I will face that problem when it comes closer.

Now that I have finished all the right side of the board I can think of building the central section. Stay tuned for more!

    1. Thanks! I wanted to finish that part before I moved onto the real stuff, which will be the central section of the board. Wish me luck with that!

  3. I'd love to know what game are you going to use this piece with.

    1. I'd love to know too! :D
My idea is to run kind of Rogue Trader or WH40K2 (homemade edition) games. It proved successful in previous scenarios, even those involving quite a number of minis:

(I have to fix the pics of some other posts; there was one game in which we hung a Terminator from a crane and used the guy as a wrecking ball. It was glorious)

I had the stairs and catwalks in my planning since the beginning. Check this early post on the project, you'll get a glimpse of my train of thought on this issue:

    1. Thanks! This was just the side of the board, so I needed it to be just correct so I could move forward. I hope it looks in place with the rest of the board!

  9. Absolutely stunning! I've been wondering about the little bit of space at the back . . . and all that interior volume. And the implied space at the back that might maybe lead into tunnels in the cliff. Where your cult might be hiding. The interfaces between all your glorious gaming sets will be fabulous. (If you choose to follow this path to madness, anyway.) I love it! !!! :D !!!!!

    1. Thank you!! Haha, If I choose to follow that path? Oh, my dear sir, I've been planning and scheming since the beginning to make this board and the Genestealer Cult mines/catacombs/dungeon compatible as part of a campaign! Mwahahaha!! So glad you thought the same! :)

  11. Man that's absolutely brilliant, it's just what a real building look like and the madness of it reminds me of the Baliverna by Dino Buzatti, you're the best !

    1. Thank you! Haha, I hadn't thought of the Baliverna connection, I take it as quite a compliment! I hope it doesn't collapse until I have time to run some games on it!!
Hmmm. Anyway, this reminds me I have to find a name for the settlement, Baliverna can be a nice starting point...

  12. A mighty impressive model, but I'm still a bit worried whether or not there's enough room to maneuver around and use it as an actual gaming board.
It's an amazing backdrop for pictures though and once you start on the back and inside of the building it will probably start to make a lot more sense.
Sorry for me being critical, it is a most stunning creation.

    1. Thank you! Well, in this case I don't expect to have that much action at the side of the board, but the central section will have to be more varied. Of course such a board cannot host any regular battle/skirmish game, but I hope it can serve as a place where to have some decent narrative adventures!

  13. Once again, a truly brilliant effort in detailing and adding interest. Thinks like the little valve wheel on the pipe and the carpets at the doors once again illustrate that this is a place that is lived in!

For playability, I'd be really tempted to add a staircase or ladder or two from ground level join with your existing gantries, or possibly you could add a winched platform suspended from your new overhang? Giving additional movement options would enhance the gaming you do on this fantastic structure.

    1. Thank you! Ladders and catwalks will be appearing on the next part I build (I hope!), as I agree, that kind of multi-level interaction is precisely what such a board calls for. My idea is to create a little maze of streets and terraces. Keeping it playable will be the ral challenge though! :D

  14. More splendid additions! I love the fire escapes, I have to admit I thought the reveal at the top was going to be a shuttle platform, maybe on top of your extension? I also liked the flipped exterior shot, very atmospheric!

  16. This has gone from the abstract fucntionalism of wargames terrain to the detailed life of a miniature film set. It's wonderful.

    1. Thank you! It's but a glorified dollhouse! :D
This part of the board won't presumably see that much action, but it had to look as part of the whole thing. Now I'll try to make things a little bit more interesting on the next additions, as it will be where any eventual games will really take part. Oh, my, I'm gonna need a bigger board...

  17. A lot of talk about how useful this is for gaming... And I see you're planning on another level that's perhaps different in structure. It's a great rpg habitat for players to explore.

What I get from this project is, think of that skills that you buffed just by making it! This is unquestionably a "masterpiece" by the traditional definition. And it's so fun :)

    1. Thank you very much! I think it's quite RPG friendly, but that's the kind of adventures I tend to play. Anyway, I'll try to make next parts more playable and with more options.
I'm learning new techniques by the day, and I think it's thrilling. I have a vague idea of the end state I want to achieve, but I think the project is already fluctuating and has its own life, if you know what I mean. Let's see how it ends!

  18. Wow Suber, this latest piece looks huge! They could easily use this in a Sci-Fi movie backdrop. It sucks that most movies now use CGI. Bring back the miniature artists - like you Suber :) - I say!
