Viking Orks!

Though the title is supposed to be descriptive, I guess it may lead to confusing conclusions. Let's start from the beginning...

I had these glorious 2nd Edition Orks, you know, the classic ones from the starter box. Axes, horned helmets and all. I didn't want to paint them plain, mere Goff, as I've done myself in the past. I wanted something different. Hmmm... Then I got the inspiration. Coming from where least expected, as usual.

We were watching the How to train your dragon movies at home and it was all there. Axes. Horned helmets. And all! Wouldn't be that cool? Viking Orks? I mean, totally historically unaccurate, with the horns and stuff, with bright colours... I needed to do that. You know I did. So I put some green stuff to use and...

Uh. Some changes happened!

You see, I'm not taking this that seriously. Just making some adjustments to give them the cheesy lookings. One discovery I made was that the stubber from the Imperial Guard vehicle sprue looks quite in place for these guys:

Da Dakka Guy

I'm trying another experiment. As I don't have a drill small enough to make holes on the gun barrels, I put a little piece of green stuff and made the hole there!

Kind of cheating, but if it works, it works

A few pics of the WIP:

Close to the final stage...

I made quite a simple banner (you may have spotted the banner pole is but a toothpick, ahem). Again, a cheesy Viking-ish style pattern with Ork vibe

A mere piece of paper, you know

Not much else to say, I've enjoyed this silliness thoroughly. In fact the Viking theme suits these guys more than I anticipated. I may delve a little bit more into it in the future, with some more embroided dragons, trimmings and that kind of things, far away from the modern GW concept for Greenskins.

Oh, BTW. While researching for this project I stumbled upon this, and oh, how much do I need it now:

I'm sure you all understand me

This is all for today! Now it's time for a statement. I do need to give closure to a project. And I'm determined to do so. I can't honestly tell when will it be done, but I'm making a commitment to it...

...

Oi boyz, dis gotta be next thing on da blog!

I hope I'll bring it soon!

    1. Thanks! I think we all are used to a single, determined way of seeing these particular minis, always in black. But they have some more possibilties. It's nice to play with them and come to different results :)

  4. Everything about this is awesome. I particularly like how you've gone for old school comedy Vikings. I love the stubber. Please make them a battlewagon that looks like a longship!

    1. Thank you! They have a strong 'Vicky the Viking' inspiration, not only from 'How to train your dragon', they look cheesy and silly, which was my aim :D
Some sort of landship is most needed, you can also feel it, don't you?

    2. Definitely! Maybe one of those steampunk dwarf ships would make a good basis for the conversion?

    1. Thank you! I really need to give all this a thought. I already did a land ship some years ago (it's on the blog), but could definitely take another approach

  7. Brilliant result, and the confirmation that inspiration can come when and from where you least expect it! We're fans of "How to train your dragon" too, so we can only fully approve of this unprecedented fusion with the world of Warhammer. And how about a mechanical dragon? Too elaborate for an ork warband?

    1. Great idea! What about this one? Could work as a dreadnought I think. https://tradersgalaxy.com.au/product/trashers-trashasaur-avatar-of-life-combiner/

    2. Haha, that's great! :D Viking Dragon Rider Orks. That's unbeatable :D
I'll make a confession. The kids discovered me a show called 'Dinotrux' and I cannot think of anything different since then...

  8. Absolutely stunning Suber, from concept to realisation totally brilliant, I do hope you add more to this, you could even use them as Snakbites, giving them creatures to ride and such( some form of dragon/squigoth hybrid). Also how about a pair of eyes in a beard, showing that there using hair squigs ?

    1. Haha, some Squigdragons would be fun indeed, I do need to give this a thought :D
Oh, the eyes in a beard! I most definitely need to do that!

  10. y pensar que tengo esos orkos , me dan ganas de repintarlos como has hecho tu, pero vista mi marea gris se me ha pasado, tengo otras minis que necesitan algo de pintura. Tus orkos magníficos, como siempre :)

    1. Thank you! I was looking for some kind of old school silly vibe; the minis make me smile in their fierce goofiness, so I guess I cannot ask for more!

  12. For me seeing your before-paint-applied conversion work is just as cool as seeing the final finished paint jobs. You bring the minis to life in more ways than one :) Fantastic stuff Suber!

  13. Suber! This is the absolute best idea! Love the concept. Love the colors! They look so good, particularly the markings on the warband. That dragon on the boss is amazing! This has to be one of the best use of these models I've ever seen. Great work kicking off 2022 with a bang!

    1. Thank you so much! They were terribly fun to do. Though I don't think I'll make more of these (I have tons of metal RT Orks waiting, so no interest in getting more of these 2nd Ed minis), I may explore a little bit more the Viking/Celtic theme and see where it leads. I don't know it it will turn into good results, but for sure it's going to be a hell of a fun to do in the meantime :D

    1. Thank you! I believe these minis have quite a lot to offer. We're just used to see them painted in a single, specific way, but once you break that mindset, opportunities just come by themselves!
