The games within a game

Another long-time debt that can finally be paid. Hooray!

Let me tell you what debt I'm talking about. Long time ago, Mr. Whiskey Priest was generous enough to reward me with a mini on a contest over his blog; not only that, he also gave away these wonderful BOYL 14 tables:

This was last October. Here is the related blog post from then

Those tables provided me a crazy idea. An arcade room! Not that much later, it all settled in my mind. Amazing Cheetor provided me with all these additional tables! Wow!

Wonderful, jaw dropping gift.

Thank you, guys. Your generosity makes this possible.

OK, so there was no step back. I needed a place for this arcade. It took me some time. A shameful amout of time. But I finally found the solution thanks to LaserCutCard:

This time I've saved you all the cut & paste steps!

This building was just perfect for my purposes. Not only the shape and size were cool, but it also provided me these interior views:

It was asking for some stuff!

I've talked before about these buildings. Really nice choice, cool and inexpensive solution to any scenery requirements. Now it needed some colour...

Step by step, little by little

Technically I could have left the door open as well as the windows, but I liked the gloomy aspect and it would make everything easier later on for storage purposes.

You didn't expect it to be clean, did you?

I attacked then the gaming tables. Beautiful pieces, believe me, I'm amazed, they are gorgeous:

The sci-fi ones

WHFB 9th Ed., apparently :D

But I also crossed paths with some other beauties from Euphoria. It was necessary, you know...

Old, dirty, oldschool billiard pool

No dive is worh of the name without darts

Any memories?

Once again, it was necessary :D

One like this took a frakkin' amount of money from me back in the day...

Fortunately the pack only included two machines, I could have filled a whole arcade out of oldschool videogames :D

I finally found the pieces to build this simple table:

You may want to let the Wookie win...

So when all of them are put together you get something like this...

Arcade machines background sound

With some minis for scale

After weathering the outer part, you can see it fits perfectly:

Called it 'Flynn's' after the Tron 2 movie arcade

Ready to play?

The kit also provides a huge billboard. Still undecided of what ads could I use for this ambientation, but something will come to mind, for sure ;)
Besides, that open flat area is surely asking for scratchbuilt storeys or some stuff like that... Will have to take care of that...

Unsuspicious building

Back with my Besenval buildings again :). I still have a couple of kits by LaserCutCard, here it goes the first of them. Sooo, another good time with card and glueeee...

From 2D to 3D. Trying not to sniff to much glue in the process

I did quite a stupid thing. I thought of painting the locks first and the rest of the building later. But as soon as I did that and ended gluing all the stuff I realized that was nonsense, I'd just paint the whole thing with a primer spray, that would be the quicker way. D'oh.

Anyway, here it is. Blame my lack of planning

These are the two bodies of the building

And now you get an idea of how it's gonna look

OK. Grey primer spray. Once I was high on glue, it was time to get high on paint. You noticed the pink elephant over there? Cooool, duuude...

So I had to paint the locks again. Sigh...

This wouldn't belong to my port district if it was going to look so good, would it? Right, time to get dirty!

Looks more like my project now...

Of course, some signs were needed. Keeping it the way I used for The Sparklin' Pulsar, I made these, both in English and Chinese (according to Google Translator; please any Chinese speaking reader over there correct my mistakes). What name could I choose for this obscure, gloomy, suspicious and most probably illegal business running inside?

This is reverse psychology. No cop would fall for that obvious sign... :D

This is how the full kit looks like when finished:

Totally inconspicuous

Stuff added for dramatic purposes

Hm. Nice neighbourhood
Just as I'm posting these pics I realize I haven't added the a/c unit that is supposed to be on top, oooops. I'll have to take care of that, but for the moment I'm good with the result.
If I liked the card shipping crates, I'm totally delighted with this building. Seriously, pretty nice stuff, I totally recommend the kit.
I still have another one... wink wink ;)

Card is the new sexy

New stuff! And this time it's not MDF. I'm talking about LaserCutCard and their card kits. 'Seriously? Card made stuff?' I hear the sceptics ask. And the answer is definitely yes. The quality/price relation is simply unbeatable. The designs are neat and the product is cool (and cheap!!).

This is what you get. Plain card

In this case, these are six shipping containers. I decided to do them all at the same time, instead of finishing one before getting on the next. I thought this would be less mind exhausting.

Step by step. Careful with what you inhale in the process! I know what I'm talking about...

Intuitive kits

You may be thinking how strong this card really is. The use of multiple layers gives the kit an amazing strength. Here you can see a couple of pics from LaserCutCard FB. This is a picnic bench:

And that is a damn brick!

Little more to say. I didn't conduct the experiment on my own, but the impression I have is that the containers are really tough. This is how they look when finished:

Some time involved, but it's paying off

The tricky stuff here is painting them. It's the same problem you face with any container, due to the surfaces. I primed them white and then needed two or three layers to get some opacity. Those among you who use airbrush will find this easier, but for me and my brushes this endeavour took me more time than what I spent for the assembling!

Do you think this blog is called Old School Workshop for nothing?'

I added some corporate signs and some weathering on them and...

Ready to fill the board!

Mandatory comparison pic, next to mighty Michi's beautiful container (Ainsty Castings) :)

I also got a couple of buildings from LaserCutCard, so I'm not already done... :D
