It's all about the face

I know there might be some controversy here about these minis and not everybody will like them, but the fact is that, as I saw them, I just threw my money at the screen. Otherworld released some pig-faced orcs, very D&D style. I was kinda tired of the ubiquitous GW style Orc that almost every single company has adhered to (particularly the horrendous current ranges), so these minis brought some childhood memories and decided I needed a few.

Not GW, despite the skulls

Haha, I'm not green! Freee! Down to the tyranny of green!
I know these can be controversial to somebody. Definitely not the usual orcs we are used to see these days, and I believe neither the orcs Prof. Tolkien envisioned back in the day. They belong to a very particular view of orcs and, but I must say I love them.

The sculpt is sweet,  just like every mini from Otherworld
Besides, the oldschool vibe is enormous on them!!
I'm of course using them as part of my never-ending HeroQuest project. They have the right balance between menace and goofiness... They look just great for dungeoneering!

Oi! I look great for everything!

You can see I've consciously avoided the use of bright green for their skin

Bulky, oldschool, pig-faced orcs. What else can you ask for?
Browsing through the internet, I also found this beautiful beast from Hasslefree (had I ever said I love Hasslefree?)

Hasslefree 'Hogman'. You see that I needed this one

I immediately saw him as the boss for this bunch of orcs. I thought of sculpting some armour on him, to make him more lookalike, but when I came to it I realized he didn't need that. The mini is terribly imposing, there was no way I could improve it with my sculpting skills. So I had a perfect leader.

You came to the wrong dungeon, mot%&$#ker!
I really enjoyed painting these. Though they are quite different in sculpt and scale to other orcs I already have, I think I'll have no problem in combining all of them. Different breed of orcs is always good for project depth :D

I had my eyes set on Crooked Claw goblins, but now that the shop is closed I need to look for altenatives (or hope anyone has bought them and wait for a re-release!)
Well, at least you can see, my HeroQuest project is still alive!

  1. Otherworld and Hasslefree are my goto miniature companies too, they produce clean, crisp sculpts and wonderfully characterful and dynamic miniatures. I have to say that I'm not a fan of the pig faced orcs; but that's only because they don't fit my vision. Great stuff as always though.

    1. I totally love Hasslefree -all their ranges. Besides, their customer service is outstanding. I've ordered just a couple of times from Otherworld but, apart from a slight delay, everything went smooth too. Both companies make awesome minis, I love all of them!
I totally understand what you say about your vision about orcs. Anyway, I found them fun and I couldn't resist!

  2. Lets hear it for the PIGS!! :) I agree with you on the quality of the mini's. The only problem for gamers these days is too much choice...

Right, I'm usually overwhelmed by all the minis I'd love to get & paint!

  4. Beautiful work. I'm glad to see you working on Otherworld stuff. Their resurrection of the distinctive TSR-1980's aesthetic is one of the best things that's happened in our hobby in the last 10 years. As Leadhead says, PIGS!

    1. Otherworld ranges are truly beautiful, each one of them. Maybe expensive, but worth every penny. I need to refrain myself from purchasing more stuff!

  5. They look lots of fun. I especially like the guy in the full helmet.

    1. I love that one too! The helmet looks so cartoony that I really needed to get that guy! :D

  6. Very cool figures - probably not so good mixed in with 'regular' Orcs, but perfect for an individual twist in a dungeon crawler. I love how you kept away from bright green for the flesh tone, much more effective :-)

    1. Well, they're quite distinctive and I think they look nice for a dungeosn setting, just like you said. But of course they are not my exclusive choice, there's still a lot of lead aot there waiting for me... ;)
About the skin, I'm totally for this approach, I'm using that for all my future Orcs/Orks/whatever!

  7. Oh man Suber, these are honestly awesome stuff you are producing. Very very nice. I have so much Star Wars on my mind lately that for a moment I kept thinking you had painted a whole tribe of Gamorrean guards! ^_^

  8. Love these! I have some Otherworld goblins in the pile, and was lucky enough to get in on the last Crooked Claw order, so they should be with me soon.
