Splatta Kannon

A short pause in the Astropolis project so I can offer something different today :)

The title says it all, I've repainted my old Splatta Kannon. I didn't take a pic of the 'before' stage, as I took for granted I had an archive pic, but now that I'm posting it all I've realised I haven't. Well, I guess it's better for you, it was painted like in 1995 or 96 by the very younger me. No comment.

So new paintjob!

The original gun was painted in Bad Moon Clan colours. I really liked it, so this time I simply updated my previous work, didn't really innovate. I fortunately kept the yellow primer from the Gargant.

I can do a whole Bad Moon Waaagh!

So I replicated the work, but at this little scale. I used Iyanden Yellow Contrast paint as an ink:

I'm using a Contrast as an ink. You can expect anything from me!

Then I made the black fames and Orky stuff:

Orky stuff!

I mean, it's quite a basic scheme (and paintjob!), but I honestly need no more.

A pic from another angle

I also repainted the little gunnerz, but it also was quite a quick paintjob:

Da little gunnerz

So in the end I came to this result:

Da Splatta Kannon!

Boom boom dakka dakka

The model is really great, but I've always thought it really doesn't depict the supposed concept, not even remotely. I mean, here I can see quite a functional big gun, with proper ammo and a decent design. However, the description states that "it is a cannon which fires a splatta shell, named so because of the irregular way it travels across the battlefield. The shell consists of several linked rockets attached to a chain with a large metal ball at the end. The initial rocket is launched and the rest are fired on timers, giving it a particularly unpredictable trajectory. The ball and chain whip across the battlefield, slashing through anything it hits before crashing to the ground. A few moments later the next rocket fires and launches the chain and ball in another direction. It also has the effect to scatter ground troops due to its irregular movements".

I mean, I expect something different after that read. Something more... Orky, I don't know. Whatever, I do love the model.

Here you have the current state of my Orkdnance:

Oh, I should have put the Gretchin crew on separate bases! Didn't remember I did that with the catapult

Well, until I solve that, they're staying like that.

The Waaagh! grows!

  2. Fantastic work Suber, the colours match your gargant perfectly, and the crew tie in nicely. Totally agree that the model lacks the Orkiness of the description, sounds like it should have a bigger barrel, and each shot would be loaded individually, with the complexity all it's parts.

    1. Right, I don't think there was any coordination within the team! I may have to do my own rendition of that description from scratchbuilt some day, hmmm...

  3. It's really nice and the shading on the yellow works really well. I like the bright colours. It's a good model even if it doesn't fit the description!

  5. Even the magazine doesn't seem to have bullets that fit the description .... Too professional a cannon for gretchins ?! So just assume that they have stolen it or taken it as war prey from someone else, and then repainted it, hoping that no one will notice that it is not theirs ;)

    1. Thank you! I find it funny, it's quite in the early 90's fashion, so it works for me :D

  8. Oooooo very nice ... any bad moonz artillery is a great project I say :)
By the way Suber ... I too seem to be having problems with the comment sections especially if I use firefox browser. I have to switch to another browser because firefox does not allow me to comment as FourEyedMonster :(

    1. Thank you! Bad Moon are always braggin' around with their shiny toys, aren't they?
I'm experiencing that very problem, I wasn't aware it might be due to Firefox. Whenever it happens to me I try to refresh the page and it appears to work. Other thing I do is hit on the "follow" button; then it says that I'm already following the blog. So one I know I'm registered, I refresh and then can comment. Try and let me know if it works :)

    1. Thank you! I was neglecting the Ork front, but I have so many minis to paint! I'll try to get back on the greenskin road this Summer!

  10. I agree that the model could be a little more wonky to live up to the concept. But your paintjob makes up for all deficiencies in the sculpt. Beautiful, eye-catching work. And those grots! Perfecto!

    1. Thanks! There's clearly a discordance between the description and the model, but the hard thing is that they both are awesome and I love them! I'll have to work with that!! :D

    2. This doesn't have much to do with anything, but I was looking at your work on the War of the Ring board game. I just have to say how impressed I was. It is one of my favourite games of all time, but I always thought of painting the components as an impossible task. But you've proved me wrong - you worked wonders.

    3. Oh, thank you so much! The game is spectacular, incredibly well designed. But I couldn't stand the coloured plastic! :D
It certainly took me some time, but I think that any game improves with painted minis, no matter what. I enjoyed the work (even had to get over some setbacks!), had to do some other stuff in between... but once you see all the painted minis on the board the feeling is just so rewarding.
But don't take me too seriously, I've even painted my Catan, so I am no reference for any sane person! XD
