Finishing old bussiness

A very brief update today, about going back to unfinished bussiness I had set to oblivion for long time.

Delving into old shelves I found a nice stash of old Orks. Most likely from even before I started this blog. Most of them are 2nd Ed plastic Goff Orks, but you can also see some Space Crusade Orks turned into Evil Sunz and some other few gubbins.

Da stash!
I can make a full Mob with those Goffs, so let's pay some attention to them. They were painted in the most basic way imaginable. Full black, classic green skin and almost no details. There are no glyphs or marks, and for that reason I've concluded that I must had started painting them but, at some point and by reasons long forgotten, I never finished them. You can see what I mean in the pic below.

The paintjob is... basic. I believe this must be almost certainly 20+ years old
However, I thought I could make something without having to totally unpaint them. I could use what I already had as base coat and work from that point on.

For starters, I'm going to keep the green skin. Unlike other Mobz, in which I've been constantly switching skin colours, I didn't fancy doing this now. There's nothing wrong about having some consistent true greenskins in my army, after all! So I had to repaint the lips and also paint the ears pink, nothing more.

I kept the black garments, but highlighted them (not too much!), gave the Agrax treatment, and finally made some markings on the shoulderpads. It's an old mark I had already used long time ago for a commission and which looked appealing to me. I finally painted a classic chequered pattern on the other shoulder pad and changed the bases into my usual Renedra flat ones.

Unfinished, yet almost done

I didn't really want to make anything complicated, just finishing an apparent pending job, so I can count a new Mob into my army!

'Ere we go!
I'm still not sure of what to do with the other Orks on the foam tray you saw earlier. Should I try a full Evil Sunz Mob with what I have? Should I use that Ghazghkull Thraka as himself or as a mere Nob? The other characters need a pinting update, for sure, but that will come some other day. So many decisions to make!

  1. Good job on those orks Suber. Revisiting old projects is difficult as you might be tempted to upgrade them to your actual tastes. I firmly believe in Stillmania. Once a project is finished, It is for ever..... A fuckin liar I am.... Jajajaja

    1. Thank you! Just making them presentable, but good enough for me!

  3. I think you made a good call on the Goff's, as you've taken them from basic painted to fantastic gaming miniatures without starting again. Will be interesting to see what you decide with the other models in the tray.

    1. Thank you! These were quite easy going, but the other minis are somehow a difficult choice to make. I'm prone to take the Clan out of them and make a mix of different models (Space Crusade, Rogue Trader and 2nd Ed) to make a totally different Mob. But that's a decision for another day...

    1. Thanks! Not impressive, we can agree on that, but enough for their purpose!

  6. I know how it feels finding old unfinished projects. Every time I see my unfinished Orks I am overwhelmed by a sense of guilty negligence and defeatism. Maybe I'll get them done in my retirement years?

    1. Haha, I know what you say, it's a bunch of mixed feelings! Ohh, I want to do them rigth now... Oh, but I also have *all* this other stuff to do... XD

  7. Hrm... am in the mind that the odd checkered pattern here and there might help this lot "pop" a bit more. But that's more work and quite unnecessary to any except me.

Evil Sunz were always my personal fav's so I fully endorse the idea of a full mob - though it's a shame they are on Warbuggiez & Bikez for that Full "Red wunz go fastah" effect. Perhaps they need a Battle Wagon to sit in instead?

That Thraka fig is a classic sculpt and needs to be true to it's origin - one badarse Ork Warboss! WAARRGGHH!!!

    1. Oh, I totally agree, a less uniform approach would have been better, but in this case I felt the urge of getting them done and move forward :S
I do have some trukks and vehicles, so the idea of having some Evil Sunz guys is definitely on the table, but I still have many other projects to work on until I make a final decision...

  8. I've got a few of these guys but to my shame they're grey plastic! I like the style of these, not Red Period bright but not grimdark either. The chequered bits are very neat and classic Goff. As for the evil suns, why not! Yellow clothes on orks looks cool!

    1. Thanks! Right, that's the approach, not gaudy Red Period, yet not dirty, dark, ugly modern painting style. I need to do more!

  9. Nice figures Suber. I remember these old figures! A true blast from the past. I still had a rather battered Ork vehicle kicking about and bought some of these on a whim. They were easy to put together but about this time the weapons all become gloriously massive in comparison to the rest of their bodies so they didn't quite fit. Still fun to see them out in the light of day (:

    1. Thank you! Oh, but they are really fun to paint! Big weapons, big toof, that's Ork style!

  10. Ah always nice when you can capitalize on old work instead of having to start from scratch.

    1. Ohh, indeed! I had a second of doubt where I considered to start them all over, but I'm glad I didn't!

  11. Nice bit of extra detail to finish them off! I'd go for a mixed unit with a variety of periods if it was me, difficult to pull it off but it is Suber we're talking about!

    1. Thank you! I believe you are right and it's the most likely option, I still have to check how feasible it is though!

  12. Lovely to see some old school orks. Your renovation looks great.
I wish I still had my original collection of these, though I am slowly rebuilding it as a retirement project.
