Regular updating seems challenging these days, but I'm taking the opportunity to make one of those standalone projects that give you the chance to move forward with a clear conscience.
Long, long time ago I got this mini via a friend. You can see, a regular skeleton, nothing special about it, nothing resembles of any known or similar character in any fantasy universe.
A copy, not a Master |
First of all, I don't know the manufacturer. If anyone out there can point me in the right direction, I'll gladly credit the sculptor or the company. The mini is sweet, crisp and it's a perfect resin cast. Good job indeed.
For some years I doubted what to do with it. I didn't want to start a new project that could potentially get me stranded looking for (and even worse, buying!) tons of new minis. You may know that nowadays there are some pretty neat options in the market if you want to go through that path, but that's another story.
I thought of converting the mini and have some kind of sorcerer or lich that could look nice with my other skellies, but in the end I left it untouched. The other day I got in the mood and finally put my hands on it.
No, I'm a skeletoN. No IP infringement whatsoever |
Though I considered the idea of using a dark, desaturated palette, to reinforce the idea of grimdarkness the mini has, in the end I thought a more classical approach would really fit in better. I toyed with the idea of using brass or other metals on the breast plate, or even sculpting a cloak, but I believe this mini is best served just as it is. I took the main licence with the staff, which is meant to look made of actual vertebrae and a skull with a helmet, so no purple there.
No, not a Master. Just a Degree. Yes, Degree of the Universe |
Here you have a scale comparison shot with Space Marines, i.e., the universal unit of measurement.
Strangely not that out of place in this universe. We've seen worse |
Oh, don't take me wrong, hunky guy, you look nice, but I'm more on the blond type |
I can confidently say (as of today) that I have a sense of closure, as I don't have any intention of starting any project leading me to master anything in any universe, so I'm happy with things as they are.
Hmmm, if I had a hammer and a red cloak I could be Skelethor. Hmmm... |
I don't know what will I paint next, but I'll make sure I think of more puns...
Excellent work on Skeletor, or not, depending on the licence ! LOL Sometimes it's just nice to paint a model that's not needed for an army or big project as you can concentrate on that one piece, without worrying about the bigger picture, and can be a great palette cleanser. Look forward to seeing what you do next.
ReplyDeletepues te ha quedado muy bien
ReplyDeleteGracias, he tardado en sacarla de la bolsa, pero le tenía ganas :D
DeleteHa! Awesome work!
ReplyDeleteGreat looking Skeletor.
Best regards
Thanks! The sculpt is sweet, so it was quite an easy going paintjob :P
DeleteGreat job, but surely be needs a few minions... :)
ReplyDeleteHaha, and some adversaries! And a castle with a huge skull that happens to be grey! And... :D
DeleteI found that sometimes it's best to go with the colors the figure wants. Then you come out with something this fantastic! Great read too! Had me laughing!
ReplyDeleteHaha, thank you! I Thought of a desaturated palette, more on the grey side, but in the end it made no sense. The brightier the better!
DeleteYou sir, are a funny sod. Had me laughing at my desk reading this post. SkeleThor indeed...
ReplyDelete(Looks like someone sniped you on that one though: https://society6.com/art/skelethor)
Great paintjob on an absolutely sweet sculpt. I have been tempted to go down that rabbit hole multiple times, especially with the recent boardgame and tabletop rules/minis that were released of late and their accompanying minis. But no, like you I will stay clear. Sadly.
Dammit! It was too easy to be original!! XD
DeleteIt's reaaaally tempting to get into a MOTU project in 30mm, but (fortunately?) I still have too many ongoing projects unattended, so I cannot afford a new one!! :D
I'm sure he reminds me of something, but I just can't put my finger on it... Interesting choice of colours! The blue and purple do work really well, and the shading and basing is cool. I like the head in particular: he's got a Grayskull - sorry, great skull!
ReplyDeleteXD Oh, the colours are but a random happenstance, nothing I had planned in advance. The scheme looks kind of Eternial... I mean, eternal!
DeleteAh, how many memories with The Masters of the Universe: I (R) as a child played a lot with the figures of He-Man and the others - indeed I should still have kept a leg of SKELETOR somewhere ... But what stupid , here we are not talking about Skeletor, but about a very distant and more anonymous grandson! Your painting work is very effective: how did you manage to obtain such luminous colors on the bluish skin of the skeleton? Is it 32mm?
ReplyDeleteThank you! Oh, yes, this must be a distant relative :D
DeleteThe mini is indeed 30 or 32mm, and the basic colour is Vallejo Ice Blue, with a wash of Vallejo Royal Blue and three highlight layers of Ice Blue + increasing white. It really gave it a bright blue tone that I find suitable for the model!
Very nice work!
ReplyDeleteThanks! Nostalgia road at its most! XD
DeleteHow did I miss this? I think you made an excellent choice sticking with the classic colors. He looks fantastic. But definitely sinister and not goofy at all.
ReplyDeleteHappy holidays!
Thank you very much! That was my fear, overdoing the mini and going silly. I considered subduing or desaturating the colours, but in the end I'm happy I took this way :)
DeleteAn iconic character ... painted to near perfection. Job well done Suber :)
ReplyDeleteThank you very much! Oh, but does he really remind you of someone? Hmmm...
DeleteEstá perfect... cuando podría haber quedado un skeletor-do.
ReplyDeleteTenía que seguir la estela del gag final ;)
Puff. El azul y el morado, es que combinan tan bien... 😍
¡Jaja, ske lo he dejado a huevo! XD
