Splatta Kannon

A short pause in the Astropolis project so I can offer something different today :)

The title says it all, I've repainted my old Splatta Kannon. I didn't take a pic of the 'before' stage, as I took for granted I had an archive pic, but now that I'm posting it all I've realised I haven't. Well, I guess it's better for you, it was painted like in 1995 or 96 by the very younger me. No comment.

So new paintjob!

The original gun was painted in Bad Moon Clan colours. I really liked it, so this time I simply updated my previous work, didn't really innovate. I fortunately kept the yellow primer from the Gargant.

I can do a whole Bad Moon Waaagh!

So I replicated the work, but at this little scale. I used Iyanden Yellow Contrast paint as an ink:

I'm using a Contrast as an ink. You can expect anything from me!

Then I made the black fames and Orky stuff:

Orky stuff!

I mean, it's quite a basic scheme (and paintjob!), but I honestly need no more.

A pic from another angle

I also repainted the little gunnerz, but it also was quite a quick paintjob:

Da little gunnerz

So in the end I came to this result:

Da Splatta Kannon!

Boom boom dakka dakka

The model is really great, but I've always thought it really doesn't depict the supposed concept, not even remotely. I mean, here I can see quite a functional big gun, with proper ammo and a decent design. However, the description states that "it is a cannon which fires a splatta shell, named so because of the irregular way it travels across the battlefield. The shell consists of several linked rockets attached to a chain with a large metal ball at the end. The initial rocket is launched and the rest are fired on timers, giving it a particularly unpredictable trajectory. The ball and chain whip across the battlefield, slashing through anything it hits before crashing to the ground. A few moments later the next rocket fires and launches the chain and ball in another direction. It also has the effect to scatter ground troops due to its irregular movements".

I mean, I expect something different after that read. Something more... Orky, I don't know. Whatever, I do love the model.

Here you have the current state of my Orkdnance:

Oh, I should have put the Gretchin crew on separate bases! Didn't remember I did that with the catapult

Well, until I solve that, they're staying like that.

The Waaagh! grows!

Assistant crew

Tech Priests and novices require assistance from menial workers who can deal with basic procedures and help with Servitors. These workers can be later initiated in the rites of the Omnissiah or keep on doing their jobs for life.

He looks bossy

His companion looks a little bit creepy, but it's not his fault

I could have painted this mini as a regular worker with the rest of the batch of my previous post, but the pose, the attitude, the face... Everything convinced me to paint him as a Servitor.

Checking on his soldering iron. Looks safe

I'm unsure of what function does this Servitor fulfil, but he looks cool anyway.

Edward Whateverhands

If I was unsure about that one, wait a minute and see this other one:

I bet it is a Chimp Servitor

Well, this post is getting more and more confusing with each pic. The last mini today... well, I didn't see this coming, promise.

At least as qualified as any other member of the crew

I really didn't have the time to take a pic of all of them beside a ship, but t least here you have them all:

Still baffled about the pig?

Searching for truffles is a Mechanicus authorised task, apparently

Using such a restricted palette helped me to save a lot of time. It gives them a sense of coherence and ties them into the theme, so I'm happy with the time/result ratio.

Not that many Astropolis minis left. Just saying...

Mechanic grafters

Though of course the Adeptus Mechanicus does run the monopoly of technology around the Imperium, there is a number of menial works that don't usually draw the attention of a tech priest, nor even a novice. The crews of ships need to have some most basic skills, as not every spaceship in the galaxy can afford to have a Mechanicus Adept on board.

Such certified mechanics thrive all over the galaxy, specially on remote worlds, where the grasp of the Omnissiah is not that firm. Though they can barely do anything more complex than refuelling small vehicles or basic nut-screwing, they are essential for the survival of civilization, as they can patch ships up or make elemental repairs on infraestructure, until a more qualified hand can arrive to take over the situation.

More qualified? I'm the boss here!

In places like the Eastern Fringe, pilots and captains, as well as local dwellers, tend to address these rogue professionals, as they are way more approachable than the Adepts of Mars, or even sometimes they are the only option available in the middle of nowhere. It is said that some of them have amassed knowledge enough through the years to enable them to make more complex works that not always the Adeptus Mechanicus would gladly approve. They might agree to improve your ship... for a price.

Whatever, but I want my ship fixed, I'm in a hurry

They all need to be authorised by the Adeptus Mechanicus to perform their duties, and are usually monitorised by an Adept when available.

However, they can handle minor repairs on their own

Not authorised to screw smaller nuts

I didn't see the point of painting these red or pretend them to be Mechanicus-like or whatever, as I did with these other fellas. They had a totally different vibe, so I painted them in earthy colours:

Come on, people, the client is waiting!

This pic would make much more sense if they were looking at a ship or something

O, fine noblemen, would you assist this errant knight?

These Astropolis minis are a real treat, so expect the rest of them during the next weeks!

World of Twilight: Civilians of Lanakar

It's been quite a long time since I last painted any colourful lizards! About time. These belong to the Civilians of Lanakar kickstarter campaign (somewhat hinted on the title).

The beauty of these minis goes beyond the mere designs (which are gorgeous), it lays on the very fact that you have the opportunity to paint merchants, travellers, all kind of civilians who populate a normal city (well, lizards in a fantasy setting, sure, but you know what I mean). It's not only about raising armies and painting this uber powerful unit, these shiny armours, those dreadful weapons... It's about creating a whole world and bringing it to life. It's so refreshing that it's always a pleasure to paint these.

Well, but you are here for the pics! Let's start with two carts. Both of them are sweet and the cargo and the wheels are totally interchangeable:

Looks like a heavy thing to travel with

I wouldn't say for sure those are apples

Should I have added a license plate?

Same concept, different thing

Now that I think of it, I think I really should tidy up the background before taking pics

Next one, the Delgon Priest, is another nice mini. I painted the robes brown, looking for some kind of ascetic looking, nothing too flashy. Those are travelling clothes, not ceremonial ones.

I always find this kind of minis confusing. Is he carrying a pet or a toddler?

Now I got you thinking about it too

Just a couple of Enuks next, one with a tiny rider on top!

It's getting more and more difficult to think of original schemes each batch I paint!

The barrel critter made my day. It's a simple design, but it tells kind of a story. It's the kind of mini that gives depth to any scene, just by being there. You sometimes don't need anything else.

Nom nom, I eat, therefore I exist. Nom nom

Martain al Griba is kind of the star of the show on this kickstarter. This time I did want the mini to look garish. This fella is much more than a fishmonger, I really can get a sense of seniority, of luxury. You know, the turban, the rings, everything.

First class fish, I swear

Oh, great, I put my best clothes on today and now they're gonna smell like fish all day long

Next one looks more like an actual fishmonger, with the apron and stuff. He sells octopus tentacles, apparently, so I wanted the sign to say something related. I was pointed out towards this magnificent link, where I found the Anyaral Encyclopedia, the mother of all knowledge World of Twilight. Thanks to that I managed to phonetically write "fresh octopus" on the sign:

Frėsh ohktohpoosh. I hope I got it right

Not a real translation, but a mere phonetic transcription, but I hope it works.

Let's move on! Two tiny furry creatures:

Very Jim Henson like. I love them

A mechanic for the Delgon and a mysterious mini simply called 'the captain'. After some research, I've learned that it was originally designed for a side project related to river boats, but it made it into this KS.

Whatever the case, they both are gorgeous sculpts

I've left this one for the end, the Alora handler. At first it took me some time to figure out what the pose of the mini was depicting, until I realised it needed a leash for the tiny fellas, who were supposed to be running ahead. I put it all on a single base and produced the leashes with green stuff:

So easy to see when you realise, so difficult when you have no clue of what's happening

Just a man walking his dogs!

The final touch are these coins. Apparently they don't have any specific role gaming wise, they can be used as generic tokens. However, I thought it would be nice if I painted them in different colours, so they can mean different things if you need to. If not, they still work as generic tokens.

Numismatics of Anyaral sounds like a nice supplement for the game

Apparently Anyaral officially entered the Eurozone

I think this is all the kickstarter. Quite a bunch of minis! Enjoyable as always and different from the usual stuff, so I'm happy with everything :)

Just a final word; I'm afraid I'll be slowing the updating rate (even more!) for some weeks, and will probably be less active on your blogs. I'll try not to disappear completely, but I guess it will take me some extra time to answer comments and drop a line about your works. But I'll be watching! :D

Grav mules

 Some scratch building today!

Inspiration comes from the unexpected. That can be specially true when you have a deranged mine such as mine and you see things where normal people doesn't.

On a second read, that sentence sounds quite more terrible than I expected. I guess I'd better explain myself.

What do you mean 'it's not getting better?'

Dry Paw Patrol stamp thingie from the Suberlings. If you don't see how this can be used for miniature purposes maybe there's still hope for you. Well, it's too late for me. I envisioned two little cargo platforms, a couple of gravitational mules.
You still don't know what the hell I'm talking about. I can't blame you. Just stay with me for a few more minutes.

First mule: I used the upper piece. After removing the sticker, I glued some junk together...

A broken pencil sharpener, a piece from a ballpen...

...and some more random rubbish

As the shape of the vehicle was kind of crude, I thought I could improve it with lollipop sticks.

Patiently collected waiting for their time to come

They should be bars to be glued on both sides

Ugh. Big nope

This is one of those times when the execution reveals you didn't get the right idea. Having the bars like that it didn't look as I expected. Instead of the shape I was looking for, it looked like a weird sci-fi sleigh. Which of course is legit, but it simply wasn't the thing I was after this time. So I took the bars out.

This, however, looked much better to my eyes

Tubes and wires, final touch

This was the basic thing, a tiny platform to carry small goods. A kind of cargo land speeder commonly used on backwater settlemets, that kind of thing.

Let's have a look to what could be done with the other piece. Second mule:

Engine from a 40K Taurox that didn't need the piece anymore.

This time the piece had quite a more interesting shape, it looked more like the hull of some barge or anything, so I thought I should add less bits and leave it more open.

The pole is the rest of the lollipop stick I didn't use for the other mule

I added a light on the front, a holster on the pole, because you never know when you can need a gun on the Dark Millennium after all, and tiny details here and there.

Wires, wires everywhere

I declared myself happy with both and went on the next stage:

Paint time

I painted them at a time, so I could save some time when it came to inks, metallics and so.

For the first one I opted for yellow:

Yellow is always a bad choice, I know!

I used a brown/orange mix for the second one instead:

Luke's speeder colour indeed!

Let's get things dirty!

Well, not that much! After the inks and dirt, I had to tidy them up a little:

Much better. Now the metallics:

We're almost there! Final touches and...

Ta-daaaa

Ready to take your goods wherever you need, sir

The bases were really simple. I used standard flyer bases, but couldn't use a mere standard transparent plastic rod, as it was too fragile for such a structure. I used a transparent cilinder (coming from a brush case!)

It's not stupid if it works

Here you have the final result:

They look battered, but they are like new

The LGC-576 mule is a popular choice all along the Eastern Fringe of the Galaxy

Simplicity, durabilty, efficiency. Get your own now!

The LGC-841 model is quite a good choice too

You'll want to take your goods through the ash wastes in one of these!

Just a few immersive (yet afwul) final pics:

Come on! We're stuck again! Move your damn pile of junk out of there!

Looks like no one's moving from there in a while

That's right, take that turn slowly...

Rush hour is dreadful on these streets

Can we finally drop the boxes and hit the local tavern?

As you can see I've deliberately kept them out of specific 40K flavour (no skulls, no purity seals...). I think they still work for my Rogue Trader kind of settings, but they can also be used for Firefly, Star Wars or any other kind of generic sci-fi ambientation.

I didn't sculpt or use any mini as a pilot, so I can use them in terms of game. I'm thinking of those narrative games in which you decide to steal a mule and flee from your pursuers, you know, that kind of thing ;)

Well, this is it. These have been enormously fun to build and paint, it was all just an impulse and I'm happy with the results. I hope I don't have these inspiration attacks too frequently, or else I'll keep the rest of my work at a standstill forever!
